The new American opera Zorro (2022) presents a thrilling new work filled with romance, humor, and suspense. Set in the early 1800s in el pueblo de Los Angeles, this opera follows the adventures of the New World Hispanic nobleman who hides his true identity behind a black mask to become Zorro, the dashing defender of the oppressed natives. The opera is filled with sword fights and passionate romance. Armienta’s score has been described as Puccini meets Mexico, with Latin musical influences, creating a melodic, vibrant, textured soundscape with sweeping arias, duets, and high-stakes drama.
The opera is bilingual, English and Spanish; it will be presented with English supertitles. This is the East Coast premiere of the work, which is a part of Opera in Williamsburg’s celebration of the 250 anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
