At the turn of the 19th Century and in the earlier part of the 20th Century, art songs in France and in Spain diverged from the stormy, heavily emotional tendencies of German Lieder and Russian art songs to a much calmer world, reflecting love of nature and landscapes and influenced by folk melodies of both countries. Our program contains two sets of songs in dialects other than the standard language of their countries: Hahn’s songs in the Venetian dialect, and Canteloub’s in the dialect of the Auvergne region.
We are happy to welcome again our pianist, Stanislav Serebriannikov, who was last with Opera in Williamsburg in our November 2023 art song concert.
