This is perhaps the world’s most popular comic opera, based on the second of Beaumarchais’ Figaro trilogy. It recounts the day that Figaro, who is now Count Almaviva’s personal servant, is marrying his beloved Susanna, who is the personal maid of the Countess — Rosina from The Barber of Seville, the first part of the trilogy. It turns out, though, that Count Almaviva has his own eyes on Susanna. At the end of a “day of madness” and multiple manipulations by everybody, the Count is tricked into courting his own wife. Beyond the immediate hilarity of the various 'plots, the opera explores class tension, servant cleverness vs. aristocratic privilege, and marital fidelity, and combines humor, romance, and intrigue.
Our production will have period costumes. It is a part of Opera in Williamsburg’s celebration of the 250 anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
